How do I find my current location on an iTouch?
To find your current location, touch the   button found in the lower left corner of the map screen.

What to do if your location is not spotted correctly:
This app finds your location using the built in location services of the iTouch device. The iTouch relies solely on wireless networks to pinpoint your current location. If you have a home wireless network (Wi-Fi) and your iPod Touch is connected to it, touching the   button will cause this app to find your current location on the map and show it as a pulsating green dot.

If you receive the message "Location Services Unavailable", make sure that:

  • Your home Wi-Fi is on and operational
  • Your iPod Touch is configured to connect to your Wi-Fi, and is indeed connected to it
  • You answer Yes to allow the this app to use your current location (upon app startup)
If you touch the   button and your current location is not properly spotted on the map, it is likely that your home Wi-Fi is not registered in the Wi-Fi Reference Database, a global database that maintains the locations of all Wi-Fi access points.

To register your home Wi-Fi in the Wi-Fi Reference Database:
  1. Go to skyhookwireless.com
  2. Select "How it Works" tab
  3. Select the "Coverage" link
  4. Click on "Submit an access point" link
  5. Follow the instructions to locate your home on the map and submit your home wireless access point MAC address
After a couple of weeks this information will find its way into the iPod Touch location services at which time this app should properly locate you on the map. If a couple of weeks go by and you still don't see your location, contact Skyhook Wireless technical support or email support@skyhookwireless.com.

How do I find nearby Points of Interest Locations?
Using the collapsible strip at the bottom of the map , you can select which points of interest types (i.e. lodgings, restaurants, attractions, etc.) will show on the map. Simply touch the icon(s) representing the type(s) you wish to show or hide. In most cases, the map will automatically display all selected locations within the viewable area.

The number of locations found will be displayed briefly on a green status bar above the map ("Explore" mode only).

In some cases, the map will not display any locations. This can occur when:
  • There are no locations within the viewable area
  • There are more than 100 locations within the viewable area (too dense)
  • Your zoom level is very high (your view is at the state or country level)
  • A bad reception has occurred
  • You canceled the search by touching the map while a search was in progress
In all of these cases, you can still find Points of Interest locations by touching the status bar ("Explore" mode only). The app will try the search again and will adjust the viewable area (if necessary) to display 100 or fewer locations.

[BACK TO FAQ]

How do I find Points of Interest at a different location?

Simply touch the field and then enter an address (optional), city (required) and state (required) that you are interested in, and the app will search this location and reposition the map and update the list to display POI locations in that area.

[BACK TO FAQ]

How do I manipulate the map?

[BACK TO FAQ]

How do I find and track my current location?
NOTE: This feature is only available when your iPhone Location Services are turned on and you have allowed this app to use your current location on initial startup.

You can track your current location on the Map screen in both "Explore" and "Navigate" modes.

Your current location is represented on the map by a pulsating green dot when your position is stationary, and by a green arrow when you are moving faster than 5 miles per hour.

If you don't see the green dot (or arrow) on the map, or if it is not centered on the map, press the   button. Doing so will cause the map view to adjust by panning and zooming so that your location is centered on the screen.

After pressing the   button, it will change to a darker blue color . This indicates that you are in Tracking Mode. In this mode, the green dot (or arrow) representing your location will remain centered on the screen and the map underneath it will adjust to track your current location. As you move, the map moves.

Touching the map at any time (i.e. to pan or zoom) will cause the map to return to Normal Mode, whereby the map will remain stationary and the green dot representing your location will adjust its position on the map as you move about. As you move, the green dot moves.

This app will find AAA/CAA Points of Interest locations and display them, but will not display more than 100 points at a time.

If there are more than 100 locations in the mapped area you are viewing, a green status bar will appear and display the "Dense Area. Touch here to refine search" message.

This app will find Points of Interest locations and display them, but will not display more than 100 at a time.

As you zoom the map out to state and country levels, the app will stop automatically searching for locations in order to minimize searching when it is likely that the area has more than 100 locations within it.

You can still find Points of Interest locations by touching the green status bar. Doing so will begin a search from the center of the map until 100 or fewer locations are found, and then cause the map to zoom in on these locations".

[BACK TO FAQ]

What does the message "Directions Unavailable" mean?
This message appears on the green status bar of the Directions screen and the Route screen when one of these conditions are true:
  • Your starting point is more than 10 miles from the nearest road
  • There are no public roads between your starting point and the ending point (i.e. Starting in Hawaii and ending in California)
  • The service is temporarily unavailable
[BACK TO FAQ]

What does the message "Bad Reception. Touch here to try again." mean?
This app needs to communicate with our servers in order to serve up maps, locations, directions, and many other features.

If a communications problem occurs while trying to obtain the data from our servers, a red status bar with the message "Bad Reception. Touch here to try again." will appear.

This problem usually occurs when your iPhone or iPod Touch has poor reception with either the WiFi or the Cell towers in your area.

Simply move to an area with better reception and then touch the red status bar. This will cause the app to repeat the request for data that had failed.

[BACK TO FAQ]

What countries are covered by this app?
This app covers the U.S.A., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

[BACK TO FAQ]

What are "Location Services" used for?
The location services in your iPhone or iPod Touch are used to:
  • Track your current location on the map
  • Find Points of Interest locations near your current location
  • Get directions and display a route from your current location to your selected POI Location
Be sure that your iPhone/iPod Touch "Settings" have been set so that:
  • The setting "Airplane Mode" is turned off
  • The "General" settings for "Location Services" is turned on.
To check these settings, you will need to exit this app and go to the iPhone/iPod Touch Settings app.

Also, when starting this app the first few times, you will be asked if this app has permission to use location services. In these cases, answer "Allow". Starting this app and answering "Allow" twice in a row will train the iPhone/iPod Touch to always allow location services to be used by this app.

If your settings are not correct, or if you answer "Deny" to prevent the app from using location services, many of the features of this app will be disabled or not work properly.

[BACK TO FAQ]

Why might the app crash soon after launching?
Sometimes pieces of other apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch get left over in memory, effectively reducing what is available to this app. This app might crash when this occurs because it does not have enough memory to run. If you are experiencing this problem, hold down your power button and then slide the red slider to power off your iPhone/iPod Touch completely. Wait five seconds and then power your device back on. This should clear out the memory and eliminate crashes.
